# Quantity break pricing and the cart

> Why a bundle price shown on the product page does not always match the cart, and how to make the two agree

The **Quantity Break** block can show its own price on each tier, so a "buy 2" option can
advertise a bundle price instead of twice the unit price.

<Warning>
  **Custom pricing changes what the page shows, not what Shopify charges.** Setting a tier to
  £49.99 makes the block display £49.99. The cart still charges the product's real price times the
  quantity, so two items at £29.99 arrive as £59.98.

  Shopify decides every price. A storefront can never send one. To make the cart agree, create a
  matching discount in Shopify admin.
</Warning>

This is the most common surprise with quantity breaks: the product page and the cart disagree, and
nothing in the theme is broken.

## Turn custom pricing on

Custom pricing is off by default and has two switches, a global one and one per tier.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Enable it for the block">
    In the **Quantity Break** block, turn on **Enable Custom Pricing**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the format">
    Set **Selected custom price format**. This applies to every tier in the block.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enable and fill each tier">
    Turn on **Enable Option 1 Custom Price** and enter the value, then repeat for the tiers you want.
    A tier without its own switch on keeps the normal price.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The three formats

| Format | What you enter | What it displays |
| - | - | - |
| **Amount** | The final bundle price, e.g. `49.99` | £49.99 for the whole tier, **not** per unit |
| **Percentage** | A number from 1 to 100 | The base price for that quantity, less that percentage |
| **BOGO** | A multiplier | The unit price times your multiplier |

<Note>
  **Amount is a total, not a unit price.** On a "buy 2" tier, entering `49.99` displays £49.99 for
  both items together. Entering the per-item price you wanted is the usual cause of a tier showing
  half what you expected.
</Note>

## Make the cart match

Whatever you display, create the equivalent discount in Shopify so the customer is actually charged
it.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Work out the real discount">
    Compare the normal total against your displayed price. Two items at £29.99 is £59.98; showing
    £49.99 is £9.99 off, or roughly 16.6%.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create an automatic discount">
    In Shopify admin go to **Discounts → Create discount → Amount off products**, and set the
    method to **Automatic** so the customer does not have to type a code.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Scope it to the product">
    Under **Applies to**, select the specific product. Under minimum requirements, set the minimum
    quantity to match the tier, so a "buy 2" discount only applies from 2 items.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Test it">
    Add the tier to the cart and check the total. The cart, not the product page, is the number the
    customer pays.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  Set the minimum quantity on the discount. Without it, a discount meant for the "buy 2" tier also
  applies to a single item, and every customer gets bundle pricing.
</Warning>

## Multiple tiers

Each tier needs its own discount, because the saving differs per tier. A three tier block usually
means three automatic discounts, each with its own minimum quantity.

Shopify applies the best matching discount, so scope them by quantity and let them stack in order:
minimum 2 for the second tier, minimum 3 for the third, and so on.

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="The cart total is higher than the price on the product page">
    Expected until a discount exists. The block displays your figure; Shopify charges the real
    price. Create the automatic discount described above.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The tier shows a much lower price than I typed">
    In **Amount** format the value is the total for that tier, not the per unit price. On a "buy 3"
    tier, entering the single unit price displays a third of what you intended.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My custom price is ignored completely">
    Both switches have to be on: **Enable Custom Pricing** for the block, and **Enable Option N
    Custom Price** for that tier. The per tier switch is off by default.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The discount applies to single items too">
    The discount has no minimum quantity. Edit it in Shopify admin and set the minimum to match the
    tier it belongs to.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Rounding is a penny out">
    Percentage format calculates from the base price and rounds, so a percentage rarely lands on a
    round figure. Use **Amount** when you need an exact price such as 49.99.
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>

## The savings line and multiple currencies

Each tier can show a savings line under it, such as "You save \$26". How you write that line decides
whether it survives a currency change.

| What you type | What the customer sees |
| - | - |
| `You save {savings}` | The calculated saving, rendered in the customer's currency |
| `You save \$26` | Exactly `You save \$26`, in every currency |

The `{savings}` placeholder is replaced with the real figure at page load, formatted for the active
market. Type a number in yourself and it is plain text, so a store selling in four currencies shows
the same amount to all four.

<Warning>
  This bites when you turn on per tier savings text. **Enable individual savings text** lets you
  write a line for each tier, and it is tempting to type the amount. Keep `{savings}` in the text
  and add words around it instead, for example `Save {savings} on this bundle`.
</Warning>

<Note>
  The default format is `You save {savings}`, so a store that never touches these settings is
  already correct. The savings **badge** is calculated separately and updates as the customer
  switches variants.
</Note>

<Note>
  Free gifts work the same way: the theme marks an item as free, Shopify has to be told to charge
  zero for it. See [Free gifts](/guides/free-gifts).
