# Activate your license

> Enter your license key, fix License Required errors, and manage multiple licenses

Your Elixir license is tied to one Shopify store's default `.myshopify.com` URL. Until the key is entered and matches that store, the theme shows a **License Required** message on the storefront.

Manage your keys at [app.ecomelixir.com/licenses](https://app.ecomelixir.com/licenses).

## Activate the theme

<Steps>
  <Step title="Copy your license key">
    Go to [app.ecomelixir.com/licenses](https://app.ecomelixir.com/licenses) and copy the key for the store you are setting up.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the theme editor">
    In Shopify admin, go to **Online Store → Themes** and click **Customize** on your Elixir theme.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Paste the key">
    Go to **Theme settings → License**, paste the key, and save.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm it worked">
    Refresh the preview. The **License Required** message should be gone.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  Activate the license while the theme is still unpublished. You can configure and test the whole store before it goes live.
</Tip>

## Find your `.myshopify.com` URL

Licensing uses your store's permanent Shopify identifier, never your custom domain. A store selling at `bestbrand.com` might have the identifier `bestbrand-store.myshopify.com`, and only the second one works.

Find it in Shopify admin under **Settings → Domains**. It is listed as the default or permanent domain.

## "License Required" will not go away

Work through these in order, and refresh the preview after each one.

| Check | What to look for |
| - | - |
| **The key was pasted cleanly** | Copy it again from the dashboard. A trailing space or a line break from copy and paste is the single most common cause. |
| **The domain matches** | The license must be assigned to the store's `.myshopify.com` URL, not the custom domain. |
| **The right account** | Confirm you are signed in to the Elixir account that made the purchase. A second email address is easy to forget. |
| **The license is free** | If the key is already assigned to another store, it cannot activate here. Move it first, see [Transfer a license](/guides/transfer-a-license-to-another-store). |
| **A recent transfer** | The licence moves as soon as you submit the change of store request, so a transfer does not leave it stuck on the old store. If the new store still gates, hard refresh the storefront, since the theme caches the last check in your browser. |
| **Custom code** | Test in a clean, unpublished copy of the theme. If the clean copy activates, something in your code edits is interfering. |

<Note>
  The license is checked against the store, not the theme copy. Duplicating a licensed theme does not consume a second license, and both copies stay activated on the same store.
</Note>

## Running more than one store

Each store needs its own license. If you run several stores, keep a short record of which key belongs to which one:

| Track | Why it matters |
| - | - |
| License ID | Tells two keys apart when both are active |
| Purchase email | The account each key lives under |
| Assigned store | The `.myshopify.com` domain currently holding it |

Do not activate the same license on two stores at once. Even when it appears to work briefly, the second store will fail its check and fall back to **License Required**.

<Warning>
  Development stores count. If you activated a license on a development store to build the site, transfer it to the production store before launch rather than buying a second key.
</Warning>

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="The key is rejected as invalid">
    Re-copy it from the dashboard rather than from an email or a screenshot, and check for a space at either end. If it still fails, confirm the key has not already been assigned to a different store.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The license shows the wrong store">
    Open [app.ecomelixir.com/licenses](https://app.ecomelixir.com/licenses) and check the assignment. If it points at an old or closed store, submit a transfer, see [Transfer a license](/guides/transfer-a-license-to-another-store).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="It worked before and now shows License Required">
    Something about the store identity changed. Check whether the store was migrated, renamed, or replaced, and whether the theme was moved to a different store. The `.myshopify.com` domain is what the check reads.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I cannot find my purchase at all">
    You are probably signed in with a different email than the one used at checkout. Search your inbox for the order confirmation to identify the purchase email. See [Invoices and billing](/guides/invoices-and-billing).
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>

## If it is still not resolved

Have this ready before you open a support request:

* Your license ID, or the key with the middle characters masked
* The `.myshopify.com` domain you are activating on
* Your theme version
* A screenshot of the exact error
